Revitalizing Bold Shopify Apps: Driving Merchant Growth Through AI and UX Innovation

As the sole product designer supporting Bold’s SMB Shopify suite—including Subscriptions, Upsell, Custom Pricing, and Memberships—I lead product design across multiple domains to revitalize and modernize these apps. My work has focused on increasing merchant engagement, boosting profitability, and reducing churn through AI-powered features, UX enhancements, and Shopify-native improvements.

From launching Smart Offers in Bold Upsell to designing Revenue Maximizers across apps, my goal has been to turn Bold’s Shopify tools into a cohesive, scalable platform aligned with Shopify’s best practices—and built for long-term merchant success.

1. Project Overview


My Role:

Senior Product Designer – led design strategy, merchant research, high-fidelity Figma prototypes, and cross-functional collaboration across four Shopify apps.

Outcomes:

This ongoing initiative has contributed to Bold’s Shopify apps evolving into modern, high-converting tools that support sustainable growth. Key improvements include:

  • Successful launch of AI-powered Smart Offers in Bold Upsell
  • A new Revenue Maximizers feature surface across apps to boost conversions
  • UX and feature improvements toward Built for Shopify alignment
  • Improved onboarding, activation rates, and pricing plan clarity
  • Shift from cash burn to revenue-generating performance in Bold's SMB apps

2. Understanding the Problem


Fragmented UX & Feature Discovery

Each Bold app had grown independently, leading to inconsistent interfaces, scattered feature access, and friction in onboarding and activation. Merchants often struggled to discover high-impact tools that could increase their revenue and retain customers.

High Churn, Low Activation

Bold’s apps were seeing high merchant churn and low activation rates due to friction during onboarding and unclear value communication. With Shopify pushing for more seamless, performant, and native app experiences, Bold needed to evolve fast—or risk being left behind.

3. Process

To understand merchant pain points and set a foundation for sustainable growth, I:

  • Conducted research into merchant behavior, onboarding drop-off, and feature usage patterns
  • Facilitated workshops with product, engineering, and marketing teams to align on UX priorities
  • Audited competitors and top Shopify apps to benchmark best-in-class experiences
  • Created high-fidelity prototypes in Figma for new and updated user flows
  • Worked closely with engineering throughout development to ensure high-quality implementation
  • Collaborated with Bold's marketing team to design in-app messaging and new feature rollouts

This was not a single redesign project, but an ongoing initiative to improve every part of the merchant journey—from install to monetization.

4. The Solution


A Unified, Growth-Focused Experience Across Four Apps

AI-Powered Smart Offers
I designed the launch experience for Smart Offers—an AI system in Bold Upsell that automatically selects the best upsell and cross-sell offers for each shopper. This required designing controls for both manual and AI-powered offers, along with transparent analytics so merchants could trust the system.

Revenue Maximizers
To make it easier for merchants to boost performance, I led the design of the Revenue Maximizers experience: a centralized in-app surface that promotes features proven to increase conversions, average order value, and subscriber lifetime value. This page became a key UX pattern used across multiple Bold apps.

Built for Shopify Alignment
While only Bold Upsell achieved the Built for Shopify badge at the time, I supported visual and UX improvements in other apps to meet Shopify’s new standards—including component consistency, performance optimization, and improved onboarding flows.

UX Improvements Across the Suite

  • Refined onboarding flows to improve activation
  • Redesigned pricing plans for clarity and value alignment
  • Simplified navigation to help merchants find tools faster
  • Improved mobile responsiveness and UI consistency
