Bold Booster: A Effortless PayPal Integration for Magento

I took the lead on the UI/UX for a partnership between Bold and PayPal to roll out a free Magento integration. This integration was aimed at increasing checkout conversion rates and enhancing the average order value for Magento merchants. Plus, it makes it super easy to use PayPal’s full range of payment options without requiring developer (technical user) attention.

1. Project Overview

Deliverables:

• Competitive analysis
• Agreement on product and business strategy with stakeholders from Bold and PayPal
• Research into merchant pain points and how they behave during checkout
• Numerous rounds of usability testing and several wireframe revisions
• High-fidelity prototypes created in Figma
• Hands-on collaboration with engineers to make sure everything was implemented correctly

2. Understanding the Problem

Complexity Blocked Adoption

PayPal has a strong suite of tools, including Pay Later, digital wallets, and fraud protection, but many Magento merchants don’t have the developer resources to integrate everything fully. This often leads to:

Merchants needed a no-code solution to streamline payments and create a modern checkout experience that actually converts buyers.

I adopted a UX approach that prioritized clarity, conversion, and easy setup:

• Researched friction points found in current PayPal integrations and Magento payment processes

• Led a competitive analysis of various checkout solutions (think Shopify, Stripe, WooCommerce)
• Designed and tested onboarding flows to guarantee a successful self-serve experience for non-technical merchants
• Worked closely with engineering to check edge cases and ensure everything was consistent across platforms
